REFRACTIVE SURGERY AT SUBURBAN VISION CARE Welcome to Suburban Vision Care. Our Doctor is experienced in managing refractive surgery cases. Our goal is to provide you with state-of-the-art pre- and post-operative care. We want your surgical experience to go smoothly, and to minimize your risk of any complications. First, we will perform a comprehensive examination of your eyes. This examination will not only determine your refractive error for possible surgical correction, but more importantly, determine if there are any reasons you should not have refractive surgery. If any ocular disease process is present, we will offer treatment prior to proceeding with refractive surgery. After determining your eyes are healthy and that you are a candidate for refractive surgery, we will discuss your surgical alternatives. Surgical corrections are available for nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia), as well as astigmatism. There are even surgical alternatives for bifocal wearers. Your doctor will discuss the best alternative for you after your examination. Although LASIK is the most commonly performed procedure today, PRK, LASEK (epi-LASIK), CK (Conductive Keratoplasty), and clear lensectomy are alternatives for patients with special refractive needs. Contact lens wearers require special consideration. You must be fully de-adapted from your contact lenses prior to surgery, to insure a stable outcome. Rigid gas permeable lens wearers should schedule a baseline topographic analysis of the cornea after removing the lenses for three days. Subsequent measurements will allow us to determine when your cornea has stabilized enough for surgical correction. We utilize a specialized instrument called a corneal topographer to take a landscape picture of your cornea. This computerized device records 20,000 points across the surface of your cornea to look for any irregularities. In addition, we use this instrument post-operatively to determine when your eye has stabilized from the surgery. We will take time with you to insure you understand your surgical options, explain both the risks and benefits to the surgery, give you pre- and post-operative instructions to care for your eyes. We will help you schedule your appointments, supply maps to the surgery center, and ‘hand-hold’ you thru the refractive surgery process. At any time you have questions or concerns, please ask. FEES Your initial examination fee covers your basic eye examination. This fee is due the day of your examination. Due to Ohio law, we cannot quote specific fees on our website for professional services. Please contact our office if you would like an estimate. Keep in mind that your fees may vary, on a case by case basis, as your care is individually tailored to your needs. Exact fees will be quoted by the doctor after your examination. Fees for your basic examination may (or may not...) be covered by vision care insurance or major medical insurance, depending upon standard issues regarding eligibility for coverage. Topographical corneal mapping is performed at your initial visit. This additional diagnostic test is performed to look for any imperfections in your corneal surface. If you elect not to proceed with refractive surgery, or are determined to be a non-candidate, there is an additional fee for this service. Otherwise, topography is included in your global co-management fee. Subsequent treatment of any pre-existing eye disease, requiring additional diagnostic testing, or additional office visits, are billed separately. Treatment services related to eye disease can be billed to your major medical insurance (provided we are on the plan, or there are out-of-network benefits). Our staff will be glad to assist you with your insurance questions, and verify your benefits. If your eyes are healthy, and you choose to proceed with refractive surgery, our global co-management fee will be due one week prior to your surgery date. Your co-management fee covers additional services provided at your initial pre-operative workup, as well as your post-operative care for three months after your surgery date. Patients choosing to finance their refractive surgery need discuss this with our refractive coordinator prior to surgery. The co-management portion of your refractive surgery fee may be financed thru select facilities. All surgical patients need evaluated one day post-operatively. We recommend continued follow-up on day 1, day 4, day 11, then at 1 month, 2 months, and 3 months. Additional visits are scheduled as medically necessary, and are included for 90 days post-op. We will periodically submit reports of your progress and outcome to your surgeon. A small percentage of refractive surgery patients will show regression, and need a second procedure to fine tune the optical correction. Additional office visits required due to enhancement, or continued medical care beyond 90 days, are not covered in the initial co-management fee. We will discuss this with you at the time enhancement is done. Should you require post-op care beyond 90 days, fees will be quoted on a case-by-case basis. Non-covered services in the post-operative period are any service not related directly to the refractive surgery. This includes ongoing treatment of any pre-existing eye disease (i.e., glaucoma, chronic dry eye), or treatment of any eye disease acquired subsequent to surgery (ie, pink eye, foreign body removal, etc), not directly related to the refractive surgery. Fees for the actual refractive surgery are paid directly to the surgery center, and will be quoted to you by the refractive surgery center. A partial listing of non-covered services includes:
We recommend all surgical patients be re-examined on a yearly basis, not only to monitor for potential complications of surgery, but also to insure the continued good health of the eyes. Remember, just because you do not need eyeglasses or contact lenses does not mean that you will not develop glaucoma, retinal tears or detachments, etc. Often eye diseases are not detected by the patients until they are moderately advanced. Our goal is to provide ongoing eyecare, so you may enjoy a lifetime of healthy eyesight ! Your annual examination is not included as a service in your co-management fee. At the time of your annual examination we will send a report to your surgeon to keep him informed of your progress and outcome. A small percentage of refractive surgery patients will show regression, and need a second procedure to fine tune the optical correction. Additional office visits required due to enhancement are not covered in the initial co-management fee. We will discuss this with you at the time enhancement is done. We welcome the opportunity to be of service to you, your friends, and family. Our practice grows from the kind referrals of our satisfied patients. If you choose refractive surgery as an option, great! But remember... we also provide routine eyecare services for the whole family. If you have any questions regarding refractive surgery, please ask for our Refractive Surgery Coordinator. | n e w
